New K-OS: 4 3 2 1 (video)

I had a lot of love for K-OS’ 2006 release Atlantis: Hymns for Disco, specifically for the catchy-as-hell single Sunday Morning. That was so long ago, he was spelling his name k-os … or maybe it was K-os. Hell, I can’t keep up.

The Canadian-based musician is returning with the full-length Yes!, due out March 31. The album’s first single is 4 3 2 1, a response of sorts to his friend Feist’s hit 1, 2, 3, 4. K-OS explains in the obligatory bio material: “I thought how interesting would it be to do a hip hop version of this song? It’s about the battle of the sexes, where I’m rapping ‘what are we fighting for?’ Is this gender war going to happen forever? It’s me saying I hope not.”

The video is below (and you may recognize the loop as the same one from the Pharcyde’s Soul Flower.)

Sara Lov covers Silversun Pickups’ Kissing Families

Honestly, I’m not really sure who Sara Lov is, but she apparently is taking cover-song requests from fans and producing neat little videos of them (with an even littler piano … is “littler” a word?). For the latest, she covers Silversun Pickups’ Kissing Families, which appeared on the group’s Pikul EP.

Stick around for the guest appearance … OK, it’s SSPU singer Brian Aubert, in case you didn’t recognize him.

This is also a good time to tell you that the new album from SSPU, Swoon, is due out April 14 and can be pre-ordered at Amazon.

Tonight: DJ Z-Trip at Bar Smith

Bought my tickets on Tuesday for tonight’s Z-Trip outing at Bar Smith in downtown Phoenix. You can get ’em here if you haven’t already.

While we’re on the subject, Z-Trip is featured in comic-book form at BPM magazine with art by former AZ resident Jim Mahfood.

In more Z-Trip news, there’s a new video for the N.A.S.A. track The People Tree, featuring David Byrne, Chali 2na, the Gift of Gab and Z-Trip. Check it out below:

N.A.S.A.: Hip Hop (video)

I’ve had the chance to give The Spirit of Apollo, set for release on Feb. 17, a couple listens, but I haven’t formed a full opinion on it just yet. The guest list is impressive, if not a little overwhelming.

While I think Samba Soul with Del and Q-Bert is one of the best tracks, Hip Hop is noteworthy for bringing together half of the Pharcyde (Slim Kid Tre and Fatlip) with KRS-One. (That said, I much prefer to spell hip-hop with the hyphen.)

Frightened Rabbit: Bright Pink Bookmark (video)

Stop-motion/animated videos seem to be all the rage of late (maybe you’ve already seen this new video for Mykonos by Fleet Foxes). I’m guessing production costs of videos are always a concern, and this might be a way to reduce expenses without compromising creativeness. (Also note: No band needed!)

Here’s a vid for Frightened Rabbit’s Bright Pink Bookmark, an instrumental interlude of sorts from 2008 favorite The Midnight Organ Fight. It was created by Mark Charlton of Bluestar Animation.

azcentral.com preview: Busdriver

I warned you I’d attempt to interview Busdriver to preview his show tonight at Club Red in Tempe, and here is the result.

A couple of points worth noting:

• He’s a very nice guy.

• His new album is turned in to Anti- and he hopes it will be released before summer. It’s called Jhelli Beam.

• We talked about his touring with indie bands (Deerhoof, Islands, etc.) as opposed to hip-hop acts. When I asked him if he thought his audience existed outside the niche hip-hop crowd, here’s what he said (also in the story):

“I don’t think hip-hop circles really like it, to be quite honest. Some of them do. … The reason I was touring with those bands is, apart from me being really into them and them being friends of mine, rappers weren’t really fuckin’ with me. I really have to form some pretty strong connective tissue between another rap guy for him to invite me on a bill.”

John Vanderslice/Magik*Magik Orchestra Rehearsal

For those of us that can’t make John Vanderslice’s 10th anniversary celebration of Tiny Telephone, for which he’ll be performing with a 30-piece orchestra, he was kind enough to post a YouTube video to Facebook of rehearsal. It’s just one song — Fiend in a Cloud, the first track off the epic The Life and Death of an American Fourtracker — but it’s a nice peek into what to expect for the show, which is tonight. Here’s hoping the event is recorded to video and/or audio.

Incoming: Modest Mouse, Feb. 25

I’m guessing this one will sell out quickly. Stateside Presents is bringing Modest Mouse to play Marquee Theatre in Tempe on Feb. 25. Tickets ($35) are on sale today.

The band sold out the 5,000-capacity Mesa Amphitheatre in May 2007, and Marquee is probably half that size. So if you wanna go, buy tickets now.

According to Brooklyn Vegan, the band will be playing with Jim Fairchild (late of Grandaddy) while Johnny Marr is recording with the Cribs.

Mimicking Birds open the show.

The Cool Kids: Pennies (video)

A couple months ago, I hit you with 2K Pennies, a track by the Cool Kids that showed up on the NBA 2K9 video game.

Now, Chuck Inglish and Mikey Rocks have updated it slightly and offered a video, a prelude to their 2009 full-length When Fish Ride Bicycles. The video was directed by G.L. Joe, who also helmed the Black Mags vid.
