Incoming: The National (!), Oct. 14

June 1, 2010 Kevin 10 Comments

As I mentioned just recently, we’ve been waiting since October 2005 for The National to return to Arizona. But our long, agonizing wait is nearly over. Almost exactly five years after the band played the humble Modified as a relative unknown, The National will play Marquee Theatre in Tempe on Oct. 14, riding the rush … Continue reading Incoming: The National (!), Oct. 14 →

The National: England (live at BAM)

May 17, 2010 Kevin 7 Comments

Did you watch the webcast of The National show from the Brooklyn Academy of Music on Saturday night? It was, predictably, amazing and made me long for an Arizona tour stop. The band hasn’t been to Arizona since October 2005, when it came to Modified on a co-headlining tour with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah … Continue reading The National: England (live at BAM) →

Stream the National’s High Violet at NY Times

April 23, 2010 Kevin 2 Comments

You’ve heard Bloodbuzz Ohio and seen The National perform Terrible Love on Fallon. Now, the New York Times is offering a full stream of the highly anticipated High Violet, due out May 11, to accompany an NYT Magazine feature on the band. After a couple listens, I’d say Bloodbuzz Ohio, Afraid of Everyone and England … Continue reading Stream the National’s High Violet at NY Times →

The National: Bloodbuzz Ohio

March 30, 2010 Kevin 2 Comments

I have a friend who somehow has mustered the discipline to intentionally not listen to Bloodbuzz Ohio, the newly released song by The National from the band’s highly anticipated album High Violet (is it May 11 yet?). Something about preserving the moment to absorb the album in its entirety. Forget that. I’ve had the song … Continue reading The National: Bloodbuzz Ohio →

The National: Terrible Love on Fallon (video)

March 11, 2010 Kevin 21 Comments

For anyone who missed it, The National performed a new track called Terrible Love on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and, predictably, the song is a stunner. High Violet comes out May 11, so hurry up and get here already, May 11. (Also, Stereogum has the album’s cover art.)

The National: So Far Around the Bend on Fallon

May 13, 2009 Kevin 1 Comment

Not sure how I missed this one, but I didn’t stumble upon it until browsing around the Brassland site. The National perform So Far Around the Bend, from the excellent Dark Was the Night compilation, on Jimmy Fallon. The band is joined by Nico Muhly, who arranged the song.

The National: So Far Around the Bend

March 10, 2009 Kevin 1 Comment

If you haven’t picked up the Dark Was the Night compilation, you’re sleeping on potential album of the year material. I hit you with a few of my favorite songs from the compilation last month via a streaming widget. But to further convince you of this album’s greatness, Beggars/4AD is offering the National track, So … Continue reading The National: So Far Around the Bend →

The National on Bandwidth podcast

September 30, 2008 Kevin 2 Comments

Strong as the San Diego Street Scene lineup was, there was little doubt that seeing the National was my main event. (Side note: After Black Crowes canceled as the Saturday headliner, why not bump the National into that role instead of adding an old, withering Devo? Seriously, now. Devo?) There’s really little doubt at this … Continue reading The National on Bandwidth podcast →

The National: A Skin, A Night (DVD)

April 7, 2008 Kevin 1 Comment

While I wait for an album to be released in 2008 that is as good as Boxer was in 2007, I’m excited about the news of the National documentary, A Skin, A Night, by Vincent Moon. A friend and I were talking Sunday night about Boxer and how four months into 2008 no album has … Continue reading The National: A Skin, A Night (DVD) →

The New Division (who?) covers the National

March 12, 2008 Kevin 2 Comments

I’ll just go ahead and put this out there: I have no idea who the New Division is. I know, via MySpace, that it’s “an indie rock/new wave band from Riverside, CA founded in 2005 by John Glenn Kunkel.” Also, the band takes its name from two of its main influences (New Order and Joy … Continue reading The New Division (who?) covers the National →
