Catherine Wheel was one of my favorite bands of the 90s (and early 2000s). The UK-based group was part of the “shoegazing” movement: big, sweeping songs that were moody and pensive yet strangely melodic.
It seemed Catherine Wheel never earned its due. In his interview with Nic Harcourt on KCRW, lead singer Rob Dickinson admits the band had, in essence, runs its course and done all it could do. That sort of admission was kind of sad to hear because Ferment, Chrome and Happy Days are some of the greatest CDs I own.
Alas, it’s good to see Dickinson going solo. Although I have yet to buy his solo debut, Fresh Wine for the Horses, his set on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic was inspiring enough to believe I could really get into it.

I thought I was the only person on the planet to love CW…I have a sticker on the back window of my car and no one knows what it is. I’m happy for Rob, but it’s not quite the same as the music he made with Catherine Wheel.
Rest assured, you guys are not the only CW fans around.
Glad to know there are others. I saw them at a cool club here in Ariz. once. Rob Dickinson was walking around the crowd during the opener (Gwen Mars maybe?) and I think I was the only one who spotted him. I said something lame like, “Hey, I really love your music” or something. But he was polite and shook my hand. Too bad they never really broke out.
CW was the shee-it. Adam & Eve = criminally underrated. One of the 1st mp3s I posted was “Futureboy”
Oh man! I’m gonna have to bust out my CW discs and give them a spin this weekend. Thanks for the inspiration.
The “cool club in Ariz” was Gibson’s. I was there too. I was the girl with pink hair who got on stage during the last song (“Chrome”). That was the last time CW came to AZ. I love the new album and wish Rob would tour here in AZ!
