The Magic Numbers picture disc winner

These contests are always tough because you guys come straight with great entries. But this winner was a cinch as soon as I read it. The question was what’s your favorite number and why? And Jeremy tugged on my hip-hop heartstrings with his answer: “3 because it is a magic number.”

Anyone who is familiar with the De La Soul catalog will know that The Magic Number is a tune off De La’s classic debut 3 Feet High and Rising. Although it might not have been his intention (though I’m guessing it was), Jeremy not only hit me off with one of my favorite groups, he also related it to the actual band, The Magic Numbers. Well done.

Gotta give props to my man Peter for his answer of 9, representative of WGN superstation and the Cubs.

So, Jeremy, get at me (somuchsilence@gmail.com) with your mailing address and you’ve got a Magic Numbers piece of vinyl on its way. Word.

Here’s some De La now, with special The Magic Number remixes in honor of the winner:

De La Soul | The Magic Number (Too Mad Mix)
De La Soul | The Magic Number (1-2-3 Mix)

The Magic Numbers picture disc giveaway

Giveaway. Yeah, that got your attention. I have one limited edition vinyl picture disc (45 rpm) with the unreleased Delphina’s Song on the B-side. Love Me Like You is on the A-side.

So, what’s the occasion? Well, for starters, I do like me some Magic Numbers (previous post w/KEXP mp3s). Also, the UK band – with sibling sets Romeo and Michele Stodart and Angela and Sean Gannon – is playing the second day of this weekend’s Coachella Festival. (Anybody going?)

After Coachella, the Magic Numbers are hitting the road this summer with Devendra Banhart. Check Magic Numbers’ MySpace page for dates.

Here’s the contest: What’s your favorite number and why? A crack staff of judges will decide the winner by Wednesday.

The Magic Numbers | Forever Lost
[Update: Sorry for the unlinking. I fear big, bad record companies will find me and demand my first-born for posting this mp3. Please see previous link in post with KEXP files.]

Question …
Inspired by the recent jump into podcasts by Justin and Eric, I’m considering doing one myself. Nothing special … maybe a half-hour of some tunes, minimal blathering by me. Before I decide, I just wanted to get a feel from anybody who reads this thing if they’d download it. And if they download it, would they actually listen to it?

Contest! 12″ vinyl for The Con and Jak X soundtracks

OK, y’all, it’s contest time involving two of my favorite pastimes: music and video games. Some of the hottest tracks have been coming from video-game soundtracks, and I got some exclusive remix goods for ya.

New music inspired by Sony PlayStation games THE CONâ„¢ and JakX: Combat Racingâ„¢ are available. Here’s the track listing:

Music from and inspired by THE CONâ„¢ (exclusive tracks):
I Declare – Blackalicious
Danger Room Feat. Casual – Dan the Automator
The Champ Feat. Ax – Alchemist
Swing First Feat. Graph and Mujah – DOC
Music from and inspired by JakX: Combat Racingâ„¢ (exclusive remixes):
Reborn Feat. Cage – El-P
Tempest – John Digweed
Run the Table – Overseer

Tracks for The Con can be purchased here; tracks for The Jak here.
(Notice: Links only work with Microsoft® Windows® 98 SE, ME, 2000 or XP; Internet Explorer 5.5 or later.)

But lucky for you, if you’re not running on Windows, addVice and Sony hooked me (and you) up with the Blackalicious and El-P tracks:

Blackalicious | I Declare (from The Con)
El-P (feat. Cage) | Reborn (from Jak X)

Now, about that contest … The prize is a pair of 12″ records (that’s vinyl, yo) – one containing the four songs from THE CONâ„¢, the other with three songs from JakX: Combat Racingâ„¢.

So, how do you win? Because we’re dealing with hip-hop … there are two hip-hop albums I would grab first in a fire or I would need if I were stranded on an island. Can you guess them both? Leave your guess in the comments. A winner will be selected randomly among the correct entries. Contest cutoff is midnight Saturday.

Note: If you don’t want to find out about cool parties, bands or other Vice Records or addVice stuff, just say so. Otherwise you’ll be added to their e-mail list.

Caption winner

After much deliberation, the winner of the Rex Grossman caption contest is … (drum roll, please) … Goose! For his efforts, Goose has won a sourceVictoria EP and T-shirt. But please know, you’re all winners in my book.

I quite enjoyed Goose’s reference to Jim McMahon, who might be the last somewhat decent QB the Bears have had. And if I remember correctly, Goose is a Packers fan, so there was just the right touch of spite and venom in his entry. Goose, e-mail me your mailing address and T-shirt size. Well done.

More contests to come!

Maybe if I lay here long enough they’ll bring Jim McMahon back.

All-Time Quarterback / caption contest

All our chatter on the Blogger Fantasy Football League got me thinking about the gridiron. Naturally, I turned first to All-Time Quarterback, also known as Ben Gibbard, who recorded these lo-fi tracks in 1999 as an aside to his duties in Death Cab For Cutie.

I’ve owned this album for quite some time but never really warmed up to it. Maybe I’m expecting something too similar to Death Cab. The tracks have a campy quality about them: sparse acoustic guitars strummed over inexpensive Casio keyboards. Rules Broken, which I do like quite a bit, uses one of those canned keyboard beats (“samba” or “waltz”) for the primary rhythm, which is clever and yet oh-so indie.

I have trouble telling whether this was all genuine or just some sort of vanity project, something the hip kids knew about long ago but will dismiss once the O.C. gang finds out about it. If you missed it last week, Fluxblog had a thoughtful take on Gibbard and his songwriting talents (or lack thereof?).

CAPTION CONTEST

This picture (below) pretty much sums up the Bears’ luck for the past two seasons. Rex Grossman, incumbent starter, is out for three to four months because of a broken left ankle he suffered in a preseason game; last year, he at least made it until the third week of the season. Regardless, the Jeff Blake Era has begun.

For now, I’m challenging your creative wit for a clever caption of this most terrible photo. Leave it in the comment section. The winner, as judged by me, will receive a copy of sourceVictoria’s self-titled EP (and maybe even a T-shirt). You’ve heard about sourceVictoria recently on this site here and at Gorilla vs. Bear. Just thought I’d have some fun at the expense of the Bears’ fragile quarterbacking situation. Contest will run through the weekend.
