Calexico’s set on NPR

Joel Didriksen for www.kingpinphoto.com

Here’s the first batch of tracks from the Calexico and Iron and Wine concert that was webcast by NPR last night.

Did what I could with the recording. The webcast is sent at an extremely low kbps to begin with, but hopefully they sound all right. NPR’s site did say downloadable versions of the sets would be available later this week, in which case I can simply split the download into separate tracks.

So, until then …

Calexico, live from 9:30 Club (NPR All Songs Considered webcast):

Yours and Mine
Panic Open String
Alone Again Or
Deep Down
Bisbee Blue
Crystal Frontier
All Systems Go

Laura Veirs on KCRW

Dodge kindly asked me if I’d convert Laura Veirs’ performance on KCRW into mp3s. Of course I would. I kindly obliged … only about two weeks later.

Here it is, at long last. I’ll admit: This is the first I’d listened to her, and it’s quite intriguing. At times, her voice feels slightly unsettling, but her writing is amazingly vivid and her enunciation is forceful (a female John Darnielle?).

If it’s a selling point at all, her latest, Year of Meteors, is on Nonesuch, home of that little band Wilco.

Anyway, she crammed in nine songs from Year of Meteors into the performance. So get your download on.

Laura Veirs, on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic:
Cool Water
Rialto
Parisian Dream
Lake Swimming
Fire Snakes
Spelunking
Magnetized
Secret Someones
Galaxies

The Clientele on KCRW

I converted the Clientele’s performance on KCRW. The band’s new LP, Strange Geometry, is my introduction to the British trio, and I’m quite enjoying it. There’s definitely a ’60s, Byrds-like influence going on there. If you need further convincing, the Clientele is one of the fine artists signed to one of my favorite labels, Merge.

The track listings come courtesy of the Clientele’s MySpace page.

The Clientele | new song
The Clientele | K
The Clientele | Since K Got Over Me (highly rec.)
The Clientele | Lamplight
The Clientele | We Could Walk Together
The Clientele | Saturday
The Clientele | E.M.P.T.Y.

Nada Surf on KCRW, Pt. II

Here are the rest of the tracks from Nada Surf’s performance Monday on Morning Becomes Eclectic. If you missed Part I, scroll down. Or go here.

While I’m at it, I’ll say that The Weight is a Gift is nudging its way into my top 5 for the year. I dig Matthew Caws’ songwriting and the relative simplicity of the music. Good, clean pop/rock.

Nada Surf | Your Legs Grow (on KCRW)
Nada Surf | Blonde on Blonde (on KCRW)
Nada Surf | Inside of Love (on KCRW)

Meanwhile, I read this story at ESPN.com about Paul Wall’s hometown Houston allegiance. I’m not a big Paul Wall fan, but he remixed They Don’t Know to give some props to his Astros, who can use all the mojo they can get right now. Thought it was pretty cool. He name-drops every player and coach: “Whatchoo know about Jason Lane?” Um, actually, nothing. Who’s Jason Lane?Via The Fader magazine.

Nada Surf on KCRW

Nada Surf made its KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic debut Monday morning. I was looking forward to this set, especially because the band skipped Arizona on its current tour. I’ll forgive them this one time.

Anyway, they played eight songs, pretty much equally split between The Weight is a Gift and Let Go (and, surprisingly, they did NOT play the single Do It Again). They did play Stalemate from High/Low, which I won’t include because Nic Harcourt starts talking over it near the end in a frantic attempt to wrap up the show.

I didn’t think the interview was very probing, although the band did touch on the whole aspect of being judged based on the song Popular.

In a cheap attempt to lure return visitors, I’m splitting the seven tracks into two posts. Enjoy.

Nada Surf | Blizzard of ’77 (on KCRW)
Nada Surf | What is Your Secret (on KCRW)
Nada Surf | Always Love (on KCRW)
Nada Surf | Hi-Speed Soul (on KCRW)

Rob Dickinson on KCRW

Catherine Wheel was one of my favorite bands of the 90s (and early 2000s). The UK-based group was part of the “shoegazing” movement: big, sweeping songs that were moody and pensive yet strangely melodic.

It seemed Catherine Wheel never earned its due. In his interview with Nic Harcourt on KCRW, lead singer Rob Dickinson admits the band had, in essence, runs its course and done all it could do. That sort of admission was kind of sad to hear because Ferment, Chrome and Happy Days are some of the greatest CDs I own.

Alas, it’s good to see Dickinson going solo. Although I have yet to buy his solo debut, Fresh Wine for the Horses, his set on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic was inspiring enough to believe I could really get into it.

Both tracks are from his KCRW performance.

Rob Dickinson | My Name is Love
Rob Dickinson | Black Metallic (my all-time favorite CW song and in my all-time Top 10 for sure)

Brendan Benson on Sirius Left of Sessions

OK, so I flaked on Flashback Friday. But South of Mainstream has you covered there.

Instead, I spent the morning recording and meticulously trimming (via Audio Hijack Pro and Audacity) Brendan Benson’s set on the Sirius satellite radio show Left of Sessions: Seven tracks, including a Gram Parsons cover of Strong Boy.

With Audio Hijack, I think the sound turned out decent; the Internet stream tends to sound a little tinny from Sirius. Any feedback on the sound is appreciated. (Songs are listed alphabetically, not in the order he played them.)

Brendan Benson | Alternative to Love
Brendan Benson | Between Us
Brendan Benson | Cold Hands (Warm Heart)
Brendan Benson | Get It Together
Brendan Benson | Spit It Out
Brendan Benson | Strong Boy (Gram Parsons cover)
