Z-Trip offers Lounge Act remix for download

In keeping with his generous habit of giving away music, DJ Z-Trip is offering for download his remix of Nirvana’s Lounge Act from the soundtrack to the video game Skate. I talked about this mix previously here.

Also up for grabs are two blends – M@shUptight and Soundclash – from a recently released white label 45, which I ordered and got in the mail a couple weeks ago. This saves me the trouble of digitizing the vinyl. Amen for that.

I’d say you should go to his store and order the 45, but it looks like it’s no longer available. So at least grab the downloads.

edIT: Artsy remix (feat. The Grouch)

The Grouch.

Thanks to Noz at Cocaine Blunts for posting this remix of Artsy, one of my favorite tracks by any Living Legends member.

Artsy is a dis track of a different sort. Smackin’ MCs must be old. The Grouch calls out the “pseudo-elitist, old-school sap.” Or, as Noz says: “Grouch disses his fanbase. There’s something sort of beautiful about the layers of sarcasm and self loathing. It’s a lot like the blogosphere.”

“You ain’t artsier than me…
cuz you only read books, don’t watch TV.

You ain’t artsier than me…
cuz you shop at Whole Foods in open-toed shoes

You ain’t artsier than me…
cuz you speak real soft and drink chai tea”

LA producer edIT gives Artsy the knob-tweaking treatment for his latest, Certified Air Raid Material. I’ll still take the original, but I’m happy if this song gets a more exposure because of this mix.

Speaking of the Living Legends, Murs has a new single out (Better Than the Best) in advance of his Warner Bros. debut Murs for President. WB sent out streams to post. I asked for an mp3. Their compromise?: They could give me a 30-second clip with a link to buy the single.

Just go stream it at Murs’ MySpace or XXLmag.com. The track was produced by Nottz, who also produced Barry Bonds off Kanye’s Graduation. I think I’m the only person who likes that song.

Anyway, you can still get Murs’ Dreadlocks (previous post) at his management company’s Web site, too. Right damn here.

Stream: Z-Trip remixes Nirvana’s Lounge Act

Fresh off a tour from the release of his All-Pro Soundtrack for All-Pro 2K8, DJ Z-Trip is back in the video-game business. This time, he’s contributed his skills to the EA game Skate. I’ve always been a Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater guy myself, but then I don’t own an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3.

One of Z-Trip’s songs on Skate is a remix of Nirvana’s Lounge Act, which Z says on his MySpace page is the first officially licensed Nirvana remix ever. That’s heady stuff, but it’s in good hands with Z-Trip, who maintains the integrity of the original while still stamping it with his own layer of freshness. (Although a friend of mine is convinced Kurt Cobain is rolling in his grave.)

Unfortunately, the remix is not available as an mp3 (at least not anywhere I can find). So you’ll have to peep it at MySpace.

Grab some ridiculous downloads at Z-Trip’s Web site (including a couple more from All-Pro Soundtrack he’s made available). And if I’ve told you once, I’ve told you a thousand times: Grab Uneasy Listening.

Busdriver: Kill Your Employer (Antimc remix)

When you’re putting together your favorite albums of 2007, do not forget Busdriver’s RoadKillOvercoat, released waaaay back on Jan. 30.

As a nice reminder, Busdriver is heading out on a headlining tour with Daedelus and Antimc, both of whom took a crack at remixing the Busdriver single Kill Your Employer (Recreational Paranoia is the Sport of Now) – or “Kill Your Employer” for short.

Busdriver has made the Antimc mix available as a free download on his Last.fm page. Where Daedelus decontructed Employer and rebuilt it with deep bass on a house music tip, Antimc manages to temper Busdriver’s hyper-literate flow with a little hip-hop house-party vibe.

Run-D.M.C.: You Be Illin’ (remix)

rundmc.jpg

I’m not sure what I’d do if I ever lived near an Amoeba Records. I imagine going broke would be a possibility.

My latest trip to the Hollywood location wasn’t as fruitful as I would have liked, but how can I argue when one of the pieces is an original 12-inch of Run-D.M.C.’s You Be Illin’? First side has a remix — albeit a somewhat conservative definition of a remix – and the second side has Hit It Run and the You Be Illin’ instrumental.

The remix doesn’t stray too far from the original save for some additional horns and substituting the third verse (“The other day around the way I seen you illin’ at a party”) in favor of a more traditional instrumental bridge. Regardless, whenever I listen to this song it reminds of how much I listened to the cassette as a kid. Though I’ll likely go to my grave claiming Tougher Than Leather as a desert-island disc, there’s no denying what an influence Raising Hell had on me, a cornerstone of my collection … still.

And where the hell do I get one of those dookie rope chains with a gold adidas charm?

Hang Me Up To Dry (Ingo Star Cruiser Remix)

OK, so maybe everyone really is a DJ. I stumbled across this remix of Cold War Kids’ Hang Me Up to Dry while just trolling around the Internet for nothing in particular. Ingo Star Cruiser? Never heard of him … her … them?

Well, his name is Pete Ingo. He’s from London. He has a MySpace page. And I assume he’s a legitimate musician/DJ/whatever. He looks just like that guy in the photo, too.

I’m guessing this isn’t an officially sanctioned remix. Nevertheless, Ingo drops the Cold War Kids smack dab in the middle of a sweaty club dance floor on this one. As with many remixes, the tempo is jacked up considerably, though the tone of the bass line – the foundation on the original – still anchors the proceedings here.

In case you were curious, the BPM is 125. Ooooh, the strobe lights are making me dizzy!

One Am Radio remixes Lymbyc Systym

Man, today is crazy for shows in the Valley. I’ll be out at the Paid Dues Festival all day. (If an Internet connection behaves, I may even live blog it for work at riffs.azcentral.com.) The after-party show is headlined by Busdriver at Chaser’s in Scottsdale, which I’ll be at assuming I haven’t passed out by the end of the eight-hour Paid Dues show.

Also tonight: Talib Kweli at the Brickhouse in Phoenix ($35 … yipes) and the One Am Radio with Phoenix/Tempe’s own Lymbyc Systym at Modified. (And Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers at Marquee Theatre … if you’re into that kind of thing.)

If I weren’t doing the Paid Dues thing, I’d definitely be checking out One Am Radio/Lymbyc Systym. Not only is Lymbyc playing its own set, but the duo is serving as the backup band for One Am Radio.

It’s all a big lovefest that has resulted in the artists remixing each other’s work. Awwwww. I’m especially loving the One Am Radio remix of Lymbyc Systym’s Astrology Days. I mean, it feels like the remix barely retains any strains of the original. The horns warm the sound so much.

Check out a Q&A with the One Am Radio — done by this guy.

Camp Lo: Black Nostaljack (Kid Capri remix)

camplo.jpg

Recent posts by Gorilla vs. Bear and Passion of the Weiss on the return of Camp Lo got me sorta amped about the good ol’ days, which always means digging through a little vinyl.

I have two Camp Lo 12-inches from the great Uptown Saturday Night – one for Black Nostaljack (Come On) and the other for Luchini aka (This is It). I’ve yet to listen to In Black Hollywood – Weiss calls it a contender for hip-hop album of the year – but damn if Uptown wasn’t just one of the dopest, if not criminally underrated, hip-hop albums of the 90s.

Here’s the flip side on the Black Nostaljack 12-inch, a Kid Capri remix that features Run and cops Run-DMC’s Beats to the Rhyme.
